Tourism workers in Portugal and Spain have gone on strike over low wages and high inflation, forcing airlines to cancel more than 100 flights during the peak holiday season.
On Sunday, August 28, three separate strikes by airline pilots, flight attendants and baggage handlers took place in two European countries during one of the busiest weekends of the year. Airlines have warned passengers about delays and disruptions and to stay tuned for travel updates.
EasyJet pilots, who are members of the Spanish trade union SELPA, have scheduled a 72-hour strike from Saturday to Monday at EasyJet bases in Spain.
Spanish unions USO and Sitcpla also called on 1,600 workers owned by Ryanair, Crewlink and Workforce to take part in a series of weekly strikes from Monday to Thursday over Ryanair’s refusal to negotiate a new collective agreement.
These strikes are scheduled to last until January 7, 2023.
Tourism workers are demanding that pre-pandemic conditions be respected and negotiations on a new collective agreement resumed.
