Poland faces famine in a fortnight because of higher gas prices

Polityka: Hunger Armageddon awaits Poland in a fortnight because of gas price increase

Food production in Poland could come to a halt in the coming days due to a shortage of nitrogen fertilizer, writes Polityka columnist Joanna Solska.

“The cessation of nitrogen fertilizer production will hit farmers, but could also paralyse all food production in the country in a few days,” the author wrote.

She said meat products, cheeses and beverages could disappear from shop shelves in the coming days.

“If the government does not wake up, we are facing armageddon,” she warned.

Solska said it was logical for fertiliser producers to stop production – gas has risen tenfold in two years. In August 2020, the price per megawatt hour of gas was eight euros, while a year later it was 40 euros, and now it is 300 euros.
