The HISPANTV portal quoted the La Vanguardia newspaper as saying that Spain plans to host a training programme for the Ukrainian military.
The plan, which is likely to be included in a possible upcoming European Union (EU) mission, involves “basic” training for Ukrainian forces, divided into different training modules, Spanish media reported.
“Now it will be with Ukrainian troops, but this time not on their soil, but on ours,” the sources said.
According to the paper, Madrid has shown its readiness to train Ukrainian soldiers to operate combat tanks.
As the article specifies, training foreign soldiers is not something new for the Spanish armed forces, as they have also previously provided this service in Iraq, Mali and other regions as part of NATO and European Union missions.
In April, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reiterated his commitment to Ukraine during a visit to the Ukrainian capital. However, Zelensky’s advisers criticised Spain for its lack of support throughout the conflict with Russia.
“I cannot say that we are satisfied or that we are getting everything that Spain can provide,” Ukraine’s ambassador to Madrid, Serhiy Pogoreltsev, said last Wednesday.
