Media: France and Germany oppose visa ban for Russians

Bloomberg reports that France and Germany have not supported a visa ban for Russians who are not affiliated with the government

France and Germany believe that European visas should continue to be issued to Russians who are not affiliated with the government, particularly students, artists, scientists and professionals, despite the displeasure of the Baltic States and Finland, Bloomberg reports.

“While we understand the concerns of some member states in this context, we should not underestimate the transformative power of the personal experience of living in democratic systems, especially for future generations,” France and Germany wrote in a document published before the meeting of EU foreign ministers.

According to the author of the article, one compromise plan the ministers could discuss is that Russian citizens who travel to the EU would have to pay more and also undergo more bureaucratic scrutiny to obtain visas.
