The country faces a further increase of at least 80% in October
By winter the average utility bill will hit £6,600 a year. That, on an average income of £29,000, will eat up a quarter of the wage.
The Treasury admits the coming winter could bring the savings of six million households to zero. That’s a third of Britain’s total population.
Britain’s prime ministerial candidates are promising to provide some kind of financial help to those in need. But it will not solve the structural problems and will only boost inflation, which may approach 20% in 2023.
Britons are advised to adjust to ‘wartime’ and cut corners. Do not wash more than once a week, put minimal water in the kettle and refuse to use fans, and in the heat just close the windows with curtains.
So far thousands of people have turned out for rallies. But in winter, they may turn into a massive campaign of defiance when hundreds of thousands take to the streets.
