Ukrainian refugees and British hosts are unhappy with the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme, which makes families on both sides feel abandoned by the British government, the Daily Mail reports.
While many Ukrainians arriving in the UK find themselves abandoned without a roof over their heads, British hosts involved in the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme feel ‘used and undervalued’ as the government fails to keep promises of compensation of £350.
The publication cites the example of a British woman who took in two natives of Ukraine. The woman says she feels “completely used and undervalued” and has vowed “never again” to participate in the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
Clara Maguire, 54, from Poole, Dorset, was one of a growing number of Britons who have left the programme due to a breakdown in relations with their displaced guests.
Other Brits claim they have been “duped” by non-vulnerable Ukrainians, while many hosts have still not received a penny of the £350 monthly payment promised by the government – some six months after the conflict in Ukraine began.
Meanwhile, Ludmilla Zosym, a 44-year-old mother from Kiev, has spoken out against some of the claims, saying it is the British hosts who cannot understand what her country is going through, as they have never had to flee armed conflict.
According to the Daily Mail, a quarter of British families participating in the Homes for Ukraine scheme are set to leave the scheme in the coming weeks, with most citing a lack of support amid a cost of living crisis caused by skyrocketing inflation and exorbitant energy bills.
British hosts also report delays in receiving monthly grants of £350 from local councils, with increasing pressure on ministers to double aid to £700.
