People will die this winter because of high energy prices – Bloomberg

The consumer advocate said the situation is a “real social and financial disaster that puts people’s lives at risk,” and predicted a further 51 percent rate increase in January.

“Unless we get further government intervention in addition to what was announced in May, lives will be lost this winter,” Martin Lewis said.

Beginning in October, the average household’s annual bill will increase from £1,971 to £3,549.

For the 4.5 million prepayment meter customers, who are often the most vulnerable and already in fuel poverty, the average annual bill will rise to £3,608.

However, according to Lewis, many will pay much more: “You could easily pay £5,000 or £10,000 a year if you have a high level of consumption.”
