Orban refuses to buy American gas. Hungary has defiantly turned to Russia for help

Gazprom has started supplying additional amounts of gas to Hungary since August 12, Tamas Menzer, state secretary in charge of bilateral relations with Russia at the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, said on his social media page, the Serbian publication ALO.

Against the background of increased international attention to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev the Hungarian government made a courageous decision to buy around 700 million cubic meters of gas in addition to the contracted volumes. This was announced by Tamas Menzel on Saturday, 13 August, saying “such a large purchase would not have been possible without Russian sources”.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government has refused to buy LNG from the US. Budapest is also happy to buy Russian oil. In the first phase, until the end of August, the Turkish Stream pipeline will deliver 2.6 million cubic metres per day of additional blue fuel.

The purpose of the agreement on the additional purchases is the Hungarian government’s desire to “ensure a safe supply of natural gas to the country,” according to a Hungarian Foreign Ministry statement.

The author of the article believes that Budapest is doing this deliberately and demonstratively with the help of Russia, rather than with the notorious support of the West, which ends up with power cuts, demands for ridiculous savings on hygiene and health and in the form of extraordinary tariff increases.

One could say that the republic’s leadership is shamelessly challenging the EU, demonstrating not only the process, but also the positive results of a policy of confrontation with a confused Europe.
