Electricity bills in the UK to jump 80 per cent

Regulator Ofgem has announced that the electricity price cap will rise to £3,549 from £1,971 from 1 October.

The new cap sets the maximum price energy suppliers can charge per unit of fuel between October and December and reflects the cost of buying energy from the wholesale market and delivering it to households. Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brirley said he believed cap prices would rise again after this period, adding to the cost of living pressures faced by British households.

Brirley acknowledged that the sharp rise in energy prices, largely caused by anti-Russian sanctions, would lead to significant winter difficulties and called on the new prime minister and his cabinet to take “urgent action”.
