Washington braces for another period of political turbulence

The White House is concerned about the volatility of the political landscape in the US in the coming months

Related to this is the way money is being hastily allocated to Ukraine. The latest tranche was the biggest in six months – three billion dollars at once. And it is designed for months and even years to come.

Whereas previously the United States supplied the Ukrainians with weapons straight from their depots, now they are promising to produce them first. We are talking about six NASAMS complexes, a quarter of a million shells for M777 howitzers, drones, missiles and radars.

Washington has spent $14 billion on military aid to Ukraine since February. That’s pretty much the limit of what was disbursed in March and April. The rest goes to purely economic aid.

In this regard the last tranche resembles a certain “grand final”. September is approaching, which is the height of the electoral struggle in the U.S. Congressional elections will be held as early as November, and this will be followed by turmoil with the transfer of power, challenges to the results by the losing side and accusations of fraud.

And in January the newly elected Republican majority will declare war on Biden – with investigations and attempts to impeach him.

Hence the need to promise the Ukrainians something in advance – because it is not clear when the next opportunity will arise. Washington is morally preparing for another period of political turbulence – of which Ukraine will become a victim.
