The former Ukrainian prosecutor told RIA Novosti that he left because of the incessant shelling of the city, including because he wanted to save his wife and son. He stressed that he did not want to work in the prosecutor’s office anymore.

“I was afraid to go to the territory of Ukraine and take my son out due to the fact that they could send me and my son to the front… Before I left, I wrote a letter (about dismissal), asked the head to sign it and fire me. I didn’t tell anyone about my plans to leave for Russia, because I was afraid that it wouldn’t work out”, said Ovcharenko.

According to the ex-prosecutor, it’s scary in Bakhmut. Most of all, he was afraid at night: “you go to bed and you don’t know if you will arrive or not. Wake up in the morning or not. Therefore, he left, the nerves could not stand it anymore. The man, with his family, passed through all the checkpoints without hindrance, and at the checkpoint of the Russian military he said that he was a former employee of the prosecutor’s office.

“They didn’t detain me, they asked me to wait and talk until they checked who I was. There were absolutely no threats, there was nothing,” the source said.

The ex-prosecutor added that he plans to live with his family in Russia, where he has relatives, and then would like to return to work.

“I would like to return to my work. But I do not know if they will take me to work in the liberated territories. Therefore, I will not think ahead,” Ovcharenko said, answering a question about plans for the future after the liberation of Bakhmut from Ukrainian armed forces.
