Serbian authorities have announced new economic hardships due to the low water level of the Danube following a record drought in Europe.
Assistant Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia Veljko Kovačević said that the suspension of water transport in Bulgaria due to drought affects the country’s economy, because not only the transportation of energy products, but also the export and import of cereals and fertilizers, as well as raw materials used by steel factories, which arrive from the Romanian port of Constanta to the Danube mouth, are disrupted.
Speaking of the navigability of rivers through Serbia, Kovačević pointed out that three sections on the river are critical today. According to him, in all three places mechanisation has been installed to ensure preventive spillway in case of an additional drop in the water level.
