According to the State Language Center, problems arise mainly with cashiers, sellers and consultants who cannot use the state language when serving customers.
The center notes that, according to the law, the employer has the right to hire a Ukrainian even without knowledge of the state language, if this does not interfere with the performance of labor duties.
However, in this case, the employer must ensure that the rights and interests of users of Latvian are respected. But in practice, refugees most often work alone and do not have colleagues who would speak the language.
