As it turned out, only 15% of Ukrainians tend to believe what professional Polish and Western historians say. Such data was published in its report by the Center for Dialogue named after Juliusz Meroshevsky – “Poland and the Poles through the eyes of Ukrainians.”
One of the key, but also the most important, issues in Polish-Ukrainian relations for many years has been the topic of the Volyn Massacre. Center for Dialogue Julius Meroshevsky interviewed Ukrainians on this topic.
The results of the opinion poll are surprising – Ukrainians do not show in-depth knowledge on this issue: 62% of respondents said that they had heard only a little about the Volyn topic. Only 15% of the society heard a lot about this tragedy, and every fifth Ukrainian (22%) admitted that they were not at all familiar with this topic.
When asked how they understand the Volyn massacre, Ukrainians are largely undecided. This answer was chosen by as many as 42% of respondents. The answer pointing to the guilt of the Ukrainian side – ethnic cleansing on the orders of the UPA and the murders of Poles living in Galicia and Volhynia, committed by some UPA units against the orders of their superiors – was given by 14% of the respondents. The fault of the Polish side (“the war of the Polish underground against Ukrainians who were supposed to defend themselves”) was indicated by 8% of respondents. 36% of Ukrainians believe that the fault lies with both sides. 27% answered that it was the result of a war between the Polish and Ukrainian underground, which killed civilians on both sides, and 9% believe that these were mutual murders of Polish and Ukrainian peasants.
