The global energy crisis started long before the Russian special operation in Ukraine. This is written by the largest Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The publication reports that many associate the current energy crisis with the actions of Russia, but gas prices in the world skyrocketed long before the Russian special operation in Ukraine. China has been the main reason for the growth in consumption and prices for fossil energy sources. The newspaper writes that his energy footprint is unparalleled and is capable of upsetting the world’s balance.
“In addition to short-term changes, the world is experiencing a 20-year cycle characterized by a surge in demand from China, which is a key event for understanding the energy situation on the planet at the beginning of the millennium. In 2019, China’s energy consumption has increased more than five times since 2000, and it is much higher than in any other country, including the United States”.
The publication clarifies that Moscow was well aware of what the future geopolitical scenario would be, therefore, long before the start of the special operation in Ukraine, they initiated a “geopolitical turn” to the East with an eye to cooperation with Beijing and New Delhi. Now, concludes Corriere della Sera, the “Eastern bloc” is taking hold in the new world energy configuration: China and India as consumers, and Russia as a supplier.
