The introduction of a ban on Schengen visas for Russians will not help Ukraine, and the practice of collective responsibility should not take root in the European Union. This is reported by the Bloomberg agency.
“Calls from European states to tighten the issuance of visas are getting louder. Such measures may seem tempting <…>, but there is no guarantee that they will work as their supporters expect”, the article says.
Bloomberg believes that citizenship-based restrictions are the wrong answer in the current situation. This can be compared to “collective punishment” as it literally means “to make everyone equally responsible”. In order to harm Russia, the publication suggests Europe, instead of a ban, act more selectively. For example, to invite “the best and smartest Russians” – students, scientists, engineers, other specialists and even oligarchs.
