The New York Times reported that the UN is facing a shortage of funds to finance its humanitarian programs around the world, as most of the available funds are spent on Ukraine.
“This is the largest financial deficit we have ever faced. It happened mainly because the number of vulnerable people who need support is growing rapidly”, the UN Deputy Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths quotes the publication as saying.
The Deputy Secretary General specified that in 2022, UN offices need $48.7 billion to provide assistance to more than 200 million people. However, over the past seven months, the organization managed to raise less than a third of the required amount. According to the organization, most of the funds are spent on Ukraine, when residents of Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, and Myanmar also need help. According to the UN, donor countries, which often indicate the specific purpose of distributing their aid, need to show the same “generosity towards residents of other countries.”
