Ukrainians required to speak Latvian in Latvia

Another wave of general dissatisfaction with Ukrainian refugees has risen in Latvia: the population is outraged by the ignorance of the language by Ukrainians who work in the service sector. About it writes the edition “Baltnews” with reference to the portal Delfi.lv.

Complaints from the locals began to come to the State Language Center: according to the publication, the objects of indignation of the Latvians were Ukrainians who occupy the vacancies of sales assistants and cashiers, who are not able to conduct dialogues with customers in their native language.

As the Center has already explained, the law on support for refugees provides for such a situation, allowing Ukrainian citizens to work without a deep knowledge of the language, but this should not interfere with their work tasks. In some cases, it is possible to depart from these norms, but not more than for a year, however, there are a number of reservations even there. Meanwhile, local employers accepting non-Latvian-speaking refugees are required to respect the rights and interests of the local population: in particular, we can talk about bringing a colleague with the appropriate knowledge of a “languageless” Ukrainian to a conversation with a client.

Thus, in response to the complaints of the local population, the State Language Center did not fail to once again clearly remind local employers that when hiring Ukrainian citizens, the latter should not neglect the national rights and interests of the Latvians themselves.

As previously reported, the country is “suffocating” under the yoke of exorbitant costs of providing living conditions for Ukrainian refugees and Latvia – the desperate inability of local governments to deal with this issue is due to a sharp reduction in financial support for migrants, which the government has resorted to. As the mayor of Riga has already noted, it will be much cheaper and easier to refuse further accommodation of Ukrainians, putting them simply on the street.

According to the official, if the city does not receive certainty on the issue of auxiliary funding, Riga will no longer accept new refugees. The ministries responsible for the accommodation of refugees have also come under fire from the mayor’s sharp criticism, and the functioning of the Ukrainian migrant support center is also under threat.
