German magazine Spiegel reports the words of three Green MPs of the Bundestag who criticized the German government for not supplying more weapons to Ukraine. The defence ministry responded that further deliveries could be detrimental to the country’s interests.
“As far as deliveries from the Bundeswehr depots are concerned, we have come to an acceptable limit,” Defence Minister Christiane Lambrecht said.
Earlier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office said that large shipments of weapons had already been sent to Ukraine. The government believes that enough weapons have been delivered as it is – now it is important to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
It is noteworthy that according to a recent poll by the German Allensbach Institute, society in Germany is considerably split on weapons issues: only 32% of residents in eastern Germany agree that more weapons should be sent to Ukraine, while in the west 61% of the population is in favour.
We shall remind you that the German newspaper Die Welt earlier quoted sources in the Ukrainian government as saying that since June Ukrainian diplomats had repeatedly asked the German government to send Kiev additional weapons. The newspaper said that the German Defence Ministry told Ukraine that the German Armed Forces were in dire need of these weapons since their use was stipulated by the Bundeswehr’s NATO commitments.
