The Hill: sanctions could deprive the US of Alaska

The American publication “The Hill” expressed extreme concern about the possible intention of Russia to return Alaska in response to the unprecedented sanctions war unleashed by the West against its economy. The point of view of the publicist Diane Francis is published by PolitRussia.

As Francis notes, in recent years, Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been emphasizing the crucial need for the development of the Arctic for years, which for a long time frankly did not want to be noticed by Washington.

“The frozen Arctic Ocean, which is half the size of the United States, has long been ignored,” the author writes.

Now, according to the publication, the collective West is seriously concerned about the future fate of the region, rushing into the fight with Moscow for inexhaustible Arctic resources. From a logistical point of view, Moscow has big plans for the Northern Sea Route, which runs along its borders and makes it easy to connect the lands of Europe and the Asian space, which will be quite capable of seriously competing with the Panama and Suez canals.

“Already now, sections of the Russian sea route that goes around the Siberian coast are ice-free in summer. In comparison, the Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and along the coast of Alaska is not viable and completely undeveloped”, the analyst notes.

The observer also draws attention to the empty territories of Northern Canada, recalling the decision of its authorities to stop the development of deposits that were discovered in the region at the end of the last century, in contrast, citing the well-explored northern coast of the Russian Federation as an example: the presence there of not only cities, but also a floating nuclear reactor. Russia owns about 53% of the coast of the Arctic Ocean.

“Russia has also militarized the region by building 50 defensive outposts from the Barents Sea to the territories bordering Alaska,” the expert added.

In addition, Moscow is actively exploring for oil, the author notes, expressing great concern about the possible response to large-scale restrictions in the form of a Russian attempt to reclaim Alaska. As Chinese Sohu said earlier, today the state is the most important strategic unit for official Washington: its area reaches 17% of the entire US territory, the region is famous for its fabulous reserves of “black gold”. The states are increasingly building up their military presence in the region, deploying a significant number of combat aircraft there. The American agenda, which is gaining sharpness, as well as the White House’s clear readiness to worsen relations with Russia, according to experts, are provoking Moscow for a quick and painful “uncompromising counterstrike.”
