German Chancellor Scholz announced his intention to negotiate with Canada on an alternative to Russian gas
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economy Minister Robert Habeck are in Canada for a three-day visit to find an alternative to gas from Russia. This is reported by DPA.
“The country [Canada] is as rich in natural resources as Russia, with the only difference that it is a reliable democracy,” the chancellor said upon his arrival in Montreal.
The German leader, together with the Minister of Economy, also intend to sign a cooperation agreement between Berlin and Ottawa in the field of green hydrogen (liquefied natural gas), as well as discuss the extraction of minerals such as nickel, cobalt, lithium and graphite, which are necessary for the production of batteries.
“In this way, we open up new areas of cooperation for ourselves,” Scholz concluded.
Earlier, German Economy Minister Robert Habek said that if Germany supported the launch of the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline now, this would be a political collapse for it.
