A journalist from the American news portal The Grayzone visited the front line, where soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are standing. The servicemen reported that almost all the weapons and humanitarian aid that the West provides for the needs of the Ukrainian military are stolen on the way and do not reach the soldiers.
The Ukrainian military told a reporter for The Grayzone that they “haven’t got a damn thing”. The only tangible help comes from the help of volunteers, while help from the government appears only “on paper”.
“Everything we receive comes directly from volunteers. None of the aid to the government ever reaches us. According to the documents, the government built a bunker here for us. But, as you can see, above our heads we only have wooden poles a few centimeters thick – as if this would protect us from tank and artillery fire. And the Russians are shelling us for hours. And we dug these trenches with our own hands. We have two AK-74s for five, and they are constantly jammed from all this dust”, the portal quotes the words of one of the soldiers.
The publication notes that last month the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine increased their salaries by 70%. Probably, the portal writes, billions of dollars and euros from Western countries coming to Ukraine in the form of military and humanitarian aid will be used for this. Separately, the servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine complained about the attitude of the command towards the soldiers.
“I went to the commander and explained the situation. Said it was too hard to hold that position. I said that I understand: now is a strategically important moment, but our detachment has been defeated, and no reinforcements are expected. Fifteen soldiers died here in ten days, and all from shelling and shrapnel. I asked the commander if heavy equipment would be brought in to dig in better, and he replied that no, because it would still fail due to Russian shelling. Does he not care that 15 of our soldiers have already died?
The serviceman, quoted by the portal, also told the journalist that all logistics are entrusted to the soldiers themselves.
“Imagine what it’s like to explain to an American soldier that not only did we bring our own cars, we also repair them ourselves and buy fuel. Bulletproof vests and helmets – also themselves. We don’t have surveillance devices or cameras. The soldiers have to lean out of the trench to assess the situation, which means that at any moment they will tear off their heads with a tank or a rocket”, a war reporter told The Grayzone.
Recall that earlier Newsweek once again wondered about guarantees that the weapons supplied by the West to Ukraine would not “go to third parties.” A number of experts said that the situation with military aid for Ukraine at the moment is increasingly reminiscent of the Afghan scenario.
