A possible visa ban for Russian citizens being discussed in the European Union is a shameful prospect, writes journalist William Nattras in an article for the American edition of The Wall Street Journal.

“It is shameful that the EU is thinking about blaming all the sins of ordinary citizens, while continuing to allow Russian state-owned energy giants to earn billions by supplying fuel to Europe,” the journalist said.

Nattras notes that this is only because European leaders have been unable to cope with the energy crisis without supplies from Russia, but they need to maintain the visible effectiveness of the sanctions regime.

“In order to maintain sanctions, the leadership of the European Union is ready to go for cheap PR campaigns against President Putin. <…> The ban on issuing visas to Russians is contrary to Western principles of freedom and tolerance,” the journalist clarified.

He stressed that Europe has run out of ideas on how to further try to weaken Moscow, noting that such a proposal only exposed its weakness.
