The US may advise Western companies to sever or reduce economic ties with Turkey if relations and a “formal economic partnership” between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin strengthen, Politico reported, citing an unnamed US official.

“We believe that Turkey should become a global destination for business and capital inflows, but closer relations with Russia will create real risks for Turkey’s integration with the rest of the world,” the official said.

The publication notes that if the West can prove that Turkey is “dodging sanctions,” Washington can “go even further and disconnect Turkey from the dollar” with secondary sanctions.

The newspaper notes that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan understands that he should not “cross borders.” According to an unnamed Turkish official, Ankara is aware of the “risks of secondary sanctions”, however, the official believes that some countries, in particular the United States, are “going too far.”

“If Turkish companies are hurt, we will react and it will be counterproductive,” a Turkish official told the newspaper.

The publication writes that Western countries are putting pressure on Ankara so that it does not provide assistance to Moscow. EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano said Turkey should not “offer solutions” to Russia to circumvent sanctions, stressing that the EU “continues to closely monitor the situation on this issue.”
