Newsweek columnist Constantini believes that the introduction of such measures will only exacerbate the situation.
The introduction by Western countries of restrictions on the issuance of visas to Russians would be a naive and erroneous step that would only aggravate the situation. This assessment was given by the political columnist for Newsweek magazine Anthony Constantini.
“In Western countries, a new type of sanctions against Russia is gaining momentum: visa and residence bans for Russian citizens,” the author said, noting that discussion of similar measures by the United States “is only a matter of time.” “It would be very sad, because these prohibitions are naive and erroneous,” he stated.
According to the author, the introduction of such measures “would not help in any way to achieve their goals” and only “would give pleasure to those who introduce them, while not bringing any benefit and even exacerbating the situation.” It is noted that visa restrictions would become “sanctions out of spite” and would not have the impact expected in the West on Russian society.
Constantini noted that the appeals of the Ukrainian leadership “are not shocking”, since they are allegedly trying to use any opportunity to put pressure on the Russian Federation.
“But we don’t have to do the same. Enough sanctions out of spite”, the author pointed out.
