Civil Disobedience Movement “Don’t Pay!” is trying to convince UK citizens not to pay their electricity bills due to rising prices. So far, about 100,000 people have declared their willingness to do so, according to the foreign daily newspaper The Guardian.
Since the end of June in the United Kingdom, a group of citizens called “Don’t Pay!” urges the British to stop paying their gas and electricity bills from October to rebel against rising prices, and thus hopes to force energy suppliers to cut costs, the newspaper writes. According to calculations posted on the Don’t Pay! 94,643 people, at the time of publication of the article, have pledged to take part in this action of civil disobedience.
“We oppose rising electricity bills. We demand that electricity bills be reduced to an affordable level. We will cancel our automatic fees from October 1st if we are ignored. We will take this step if the promises reach 1 million”, – explained on the home page of the site.
The publication notes that non-payment is not a new idea. A similar case occurred in the UK in the late 80s and 90s, when more than 17 million people refused to pay taxes, which helped bring down the government of Margaret Thatcher.
