The government of the island of Taiwan has officially abandoned the PRC’s “one country, two systems” concept, implemented since the 1980s.
Reuters, citing Taiwan Foreign Ministry spokesman Joanna Ou, reports that the island’s authorities reject the “one country, two systems” model proposed by Beijing in a white paper published earlier this week.
“Taiwan strongly rejects the idea of ’one country, two systems’. Only the people of Taiwan can decide their future,” he said.
Earlier, Xinhua News Agency reported that the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and the State Council Press Office published a biennial white paper entitled “The Taiwan Question and China’s Reunification in a New Era.” On its pages, China promised to look for any kind of options for the peaceful territorial reintegration of Taiwan, while not excluding a military scenario for resolving this issue.
