In the Polish city of Malbork, a monument to the Red Army soldiers was demolished, 477 thousand of whom died during the liberation of Poland from the Nazis. Local authorities ruled that the monument “has neither artistic nor historical value” and can simply be destroyed. The monument erected in 1945 in honor of the Red Army was dismantled on August 9 in the city of Malbork. The demolition process was broadcast by Polish television.

Karol Rabenda, Deputy Minister for Control of State Assets of the Republic, said that over the past three decades, “for certain reasons, the monument has enjoyed the sympathy of some mayors.”

“A few months ago we met with the mayor of the city and agreed on its liquidation,” he said, adding that there are no burials in this place.
