US seeks dialogue with Russia on shaping new arms control system

U.S. Presidential Special Representative for Nuclear Non-Proliferation Adam Scheinman said the U.S. is interested in discussing a future arms control system with Russia.

Speaking at the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, Scheinman said a new dialogue is possible if Russia acts in good faith.

“We are ready to resume the dialogue with Russia on shaping the future of modern arms control, if Russia is willing to act in good faith. <…> The US is also in favour of a renewed dialogue with Russia on strategic stability, aimed at reducing risks and laying the groundwork for future arms control,” he said.

According to him, the White House has already initiated engagement with Russia on the extension of the START Treaty until 2026.
