The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed extreme concern about the escalation in the Lachin corridor and called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to respect the ceasefire.
“We express extreme concern over the escalation of tension in the area of the Lachin corridor and in other parts of the line of contact. <…> We call on the parties to show restraint, observe the ceasefire. We proceed from the fact that the settlement of existing contradictions should be carried out exclusively by political and diplomatic means, with taking into account the positions of the parties and in strict accordance with the provisions of the Statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia dated November 9, 2020,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry emphasized that Russian peacekeepers are doing everything possible to stabilize the situation in the region, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is in close contact with his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts.
“We are convinced that the efforts of the parties should be concentrated on the formation of a positive agenda in relations between Baku and Yerevan within the framework of the existing trilateral negotiation formats,” the statement said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also expressed deep condolences to the families and friends of those killed on the line of contact, and also wished a speedy recovery to the wounded.
