Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal to consider the issue of official registration of LGBT marriages.
Volodymyr Zelensky has responded to a petition to legalise LGBT marriages published on the website of the Ukrainian president. The document notes that the petition has collected the necessary 25,000 signatures for its consideration by the president.
“Given this, I have asked the prime minister of Ukraine to consider the issue raised in the electronic petition and to inform about the relevant results,” Zelensky said in a reply.
However, he noted that according to the Constitution of Ukraine, marriage is based on the free consent of a man and a woman, and “under martial law, the Constitution of Ukraine cannot be changed”. Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed gratitude “for an active civic position”.
