Sergei Lavrov visits Myanmar

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Nay Pyi Taw where he will hold a series of talks.

In the first of his planned meetings with Myanmar Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin, Sergey Lavrov said cooperation between Russia and Myanmar is based on a solid foundation and is not influenced by the political situation.

“We have a very solid foundation for stepping up cooperation in a wide range of areas. We appreciate the traditionally friendly nature of our partnership, which is not subject to any opportunistic processes,” Lavrov said.

The Russian foreign minister added that despite the pandemic, trade turnover between the countries is growing rapidly, especially in the sphere of military-technical cooperation. In addition, Lavrov said, Russia and Myanmar hold close positions on most global and regional issues.

After his working visit to Myanmar, the Russian foreign minister will travel to Cambodia to participate in a meeting of foreign ministers of the Russia-ASEAN format and hold several bilateral meetings.

Recall that since February 1, 2021, Myanmar has been under a one-year state of emergency imposed by the military. The Myanmar army attributed this need to widespread fraud in the November 2020 elections.
