Shops in Finland will have to close in winter due to energy problems

Shops in Finland may have to close for a couple of hours this winter due to power shortages, according to public broadcaster YLE.

The winter situation in the Finnish energy sector largely depends on the full capacity launch of the new, third power unit of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, which is regularly postponed and is now expected in December. However, the Minister of Economy of Finland, Mika Lintilä, is confident in the positive development of events, that the station will start generating a full capacity of 1600 MW already in September.

“Shops in Finland may have to rotate for several hours this winter in order to reduce electricity consumption. When it gets colder, power outages are possible for several hours,” YLE said, citing power grid operator Fingrid.

The main problem of stores during a power outage is the operation of cash registers, the report says.

Like many EU countries, Finland is planning a household energy saving campaign in August, YLE reports.
