US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken blocks attempts by Congress to include Russia on the national list of countries sponsoring terrorism. The New York Times reported this on Friday.

According to the publication, the adoption of such an initiative may force Blinken to impose sanctions on US allies who conduct joint activities with the Russian Federation. Blinken also fears that such a move could permanently destroy diplomatic ties between Washington and Moscow.

The publication notes that the anti-Russian initiative is unanimously supported by the Senate, as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Congress Nancy Pelosi.

Ukraine appealed to the United States with a call to include the Russian Federation on the list of sponsors of terrorism. Similar proposals were made by a number of members of the US Congress. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova previously called these initiatives “a measure of an idiotic nature.” She warned that such US steps would not go unanswered by the Russian Federation.
