In Ukraine, about 90% of power units of thermal power plants (TPPs) have exhausted their service life and are in need of renovation. This was stated by Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko during a speech at the Verkhovna Rada on June 18, according to Ukrinform.
“The potential installed capacity of the domestic generation exceeds 55 GW, including 8 GW of renewable energy facilities. But about 90% of power units of thermal power plants have exhausted their service life and need to be renewed,” Galushchenko said.
According to his statement, 13 out of 21 thermal power plants are currently operating, while the rest have been mothballed or are located in the non-controlled areas. However, Anton Gerashchenko, a freelance adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Minister, assured that the Ministry of Energy has already launched a campaign to prepare energy facilities for the heating season and carry out repairs at thermal power plants.
“It is extremely important for us to pass this heating season stably. After all, as everyone knows, next year we have a plan to work autonomously by disconnecting from the Russian Federation and Belarus in order to ensure the process of synchronization of Ukraine with the European energy system ENTSO-E in 2023,” Herashchenko summed up.
