Mayakovsky Square in Zaporizhzhya may be renamed after Boris Johnson

A petition has appeared on the website of the Zaporizhzhya City Council proposing to rename Mayakovsky Square after the outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“Boris Johnson is now a former British Prime Minister, but his contribution and the UK’s contribution during his time in power to Ukraine and the Ukrainian resistance to the enemy is invaluable. I propose that Mayakovsky Square be renamed after Boris Johnson as a thank you to the Ukrainian people for their support and assistance,” the petition, initiated by one Denis Ponomarenko, notes.

According to the website, a proposal to rename Mayakovsky Square has already collected 773 signatures. Voting is to be held until September.

Earlier, a monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin that stood in Zaporizhzhya for more than 20 years was destroyed. A member of the military-civil administration of Zaporizhzhya Region, Volodymyr Rogov, said that after the city is liberated from the Kiev regime’s forces, the monument will be restored.

Prior to this, in April, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered a draft law banning the naming of public facilities by names associated with Russia, its history and figures.
