U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, speaking at the State Department, said that the United States intends to take quick measures to “make it clear to Russia” that plans for referendums on Ukrainian territories to become part of Russia “will not work,” TASS reported.
Blinken claims that Russia has put leaders who he claims will allegedly hold fake referendums to “create the myth that people in these territories want to join Russia”.
He said the results of that vote would later be used to claim the legitimacy of the annexation of those regions, the secretary of state claimed.
“We must and will act quickly to let Russia know that such tactics will not work,” the secretary of state stressed.
He also added that forcibly annexing the territory of an independent state was a serious violation of the UN Charter.
