Bulgarian agricultural producers say that the rampant duty-free import of Ukrainian cereals into the country does not allow their own agricultural sector to pay off. Moreover, the lack of phytosanitary control over imported products threatens the emergence of new diseases in the region.
Edition RG.ru drew attention to the wave of indignation among the Bulgarian farmers. The problem is that local wholesalers filled their warehouses with cheap Ukrainian grain, which is exempt from taxation in Bulgaria. Thus, a local producer simply cannot sell his own wheat, barley, sunflower and more on a competitively profitable basis.
Chairman of the National Association of Grain Producers Kostadin Kostadinov said that the new conditions of the European market deal a big blow to the pocket of Bulgarian agricultural producers and call into question the future of the entire sector. He also clarified that the general agricultural regulation of the European Union, when literally everything is regulated, up to the name of drugs against pests, which, according to Konstadinov, is completely ineffective, does not allow for a full-fledged agricultural policy in the country.
Another important issue raised by the head of the National Association of Grain Producers is the complete absence of phytosanitary control over products imported into the country from Ukraine. He is convinced that such negligence will inevitably lead Europe to new outbreaks of diseases in people or livestock, since the same bases and trucks are used to transport and store local and Ukrainian cereals.
“Ukraine is a third country, not a European state. But this grain enters the European market and threatens the health of consumers,” Kostadinova is quoted as saying by RG.ru.
However, the most remarkable, in his opinion, in this story is that, apparently, after some time, Europeans will have to send grain back to Ukraine in order to save its citizens from the impending food crisis.
