Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Arab republic’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry as part of the launch of his African tour.
During the meeting, the Russian and Egyptian sides discussed a wide range of topics. Among them were problems of development of bilateral cooperation between the countries, the “grain issue” and the issue of Russian food exports to Egypt, as well as coordination of joint actions on the African continent.
At the concluding press conference, Sergey Lavrov stressed the commitment of Russian exporters to agreements on grain deliveries to Egypt, as well as Russia’s fulfilment of earlier commitments. Russia expressed its hope that the UN secretary-general would be able to resolve the issue of sanctions hindering operations with Russian grain on the world market.
The Russian foreign minister said that the Russian industrial zone project in Egypt was at the final stage of agreements. As part of the humanitarian project, Lavrov said that Russia was considering the option of supplying Egypt with the Sputnik Light vaccine.
The next meeting of the Russian-Egyptian intergovernmental commission will reportedly be held next autumn in Cairo.
