Foreign Policy: Ukrainian men ‘trapped’ by travel ban

Foreign Policy has criticised the mobilisation in Ukraine – especially the ban on men leaving the country. The author believes that Ukrainian men, who have been stopped from leaving the country, are “trapped” and this is a violation of their rights, which human rights organisations need to pay attention to.

A law has recently been passed in Ukraine that prohibits men from leaving their home regions without the permission of the military registration and enlistment office. The law was also criticized by ordinary Ukrainians. They shared their opinions on social networks. As some users noted, they now have fewer rights in this country than animals. Others point out that they have only been here for a few days and have literally become hostages.

Foreign Policy magazine has criticised the initiative. Local men are literally trapped, the magazine says. Foreign media commented negatively on Kiev’s will. They believe it is a violation of human rights. The General Staff later lifted the ban on men leaving the regions where they live. Nevertheless, they cannot leave the country.
