Die Welt newspaper blames US for economic pressure on Germany

German newspaper Die Welt has accused the US of economic pressure on Germany, which it says is going through an already unprecedented crisis.

According to Thomas Straubhaar of Die Welt, the United States is exerting significant economic pressure on Germany which is already facing a severe crisis. According to the author of the article, the current crisis is like a snowball for Germany: it is unique because of the combination of many factors which cause noticeable damage to the economy.

“What is new and extremely dangerous, however, is the simultaneity of crises and the fact that between individual negative events there are self-reinforcing chain reactions whose effects are uncertain, difficult to control and difficult to assess – typical snowball effects,” Straubhaar explained.

The US is playing an active role in Germany’s current crisis because it is under such conditions that Washington, which previously financed the “German economic miracle” export policy, can now impose its new conditions on Berlin, the columnist wrote.

“There will no longer be an ‘and-and’ policy for Germany. The US will give Europe a choice: either it chooses the US as a strategic ally and thus makes Beijing a sworn enemy, or it chooses the People’s Republic of China and gives up its transatlantic alliances and thus possibly the US military shield for Europe,” says Thomas Straubhaar.
