Ukraine’s declaration of victory in the borsch war was somewhat premature

Ukraine has been trying to formally establish ownership of the soup for several years now, accusing Russia of trying to steal it, The American Conservative magazine writes.

And although UNESCO recognized borsch as “intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine”, the organization added that the cultural significance of the dish for Ukrainians “implies neither exclusivity nor ownership”.

It is impossible to trace who first cooked the borsch, the author of the article admitted.

“Accordingly, a recipe for borsch from Ukraine can be included in the Ukrainian cookbook and from Russia in the Russian cookbook. Not because they invented it, but because they cook it”.
