Reuters reports that Greece, Portugal and Spain have officially rejected the proposal of the European Commission (EC) to reduce gas consumption by 15%. Twelve eurozone countries have expressed concern about the EC initiative.
Three countries have already rejected the European Commission’s recommendation to reduce gas consumption by 15% between August this year and March 2022 due to the risk of interruptions in imports from Russia. Spain was the first, followed by Greece and Portugal, according to Reuters.
Greece noticed that 70% of the country’s gas is used to generate electricity. Thus, the reduction of gas consumption will inevitably lead to problems for households and businesses. Lisbon called the EC proposal “disproportionate” and “untenable” because, according to Portuguese Energy Minister João Galamba, it is not adapted to countries such as Portugal, whose gas network is not closely connected with the capacities of Europe.
