French economist Olivier de Mason Rouge believes that the European Union should remember the lesson of the blockade of England in 1806 when taking anti-Russian sanctions.
By imposing sanctions on Russia, Europe should have remembered the devastating consequences of the continental blockade of England imposed by Napoleon in 1806, writes French expert in the field of economics and law Olivier De Maison Rouge in Le Figaro.
“The effects of the blockade proved counterproductive as raw materials and machine tools were in short supply and sales outside of Europe were never replaced,” the publication says.
According to the expert, the British Empire, cut off from European markets, was forced to establish trade with overseas partners, which later benefited the country. France, on the other hand, gave up its position as a sea power, allowing the young United States to grow in power.
