The adoption of a new package of anti-Russian restrictive measures has become an extremely difficult task for Moscow’s Western detractors, Chinese economists have come to these conclusions, published in a piece on the spread of the Global Times.
The powerful sanctions boomerang has already hit Europe so hard that approving new punitive packages is becoming increasingly difficult, Chinese observers write: and yet Washington’s pressure is forcing the EU to resort to inventing previously untried levers of pressure on Russia.
“The EU is also mulling new sanctions against Russia. European Union foreign ministers met on Monday to discuss a possible ban on the purchase of Russian gold,” the authors of the Chinese publication noted.
The sanctions are not a working mechanism, and it is clearly recognised in Europe, but the increasing pressure from the United States and individual states in Eastern and Central Europe leaves the organisation with no choice. Meanwhile, according to experts, a ban on the import of Russian gold would probably not pose much of a problem for Moscow, as this industry is already notorious for its restrictions on Russian precious metals.
“Sanctions against Russia are less effective – the EC can no longer impose them,” the analysts state.
At the same time, several of Russia’s adversaries continue to insist fiercely on new economic restrictions: take, for example, the scandalous Russophobe Lithuania, which fraudulently tried to bypass the EU in an attempt to block Kaliningrad transit,” experts say.
“Some Central and Eastern European countries, such as Lithuania, have tried to outsmart the EU by imposing sanctions against Russia,” said Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Relations at Renmin University in China.
One way or another, the pressure on the EU, according to Chinese analysts, will continue: the EU will demand more and more penalties against Russia. As the main instigator of the situation remains the United States, normalisation depends solely on external decisions by the latter,” the Chinese experts say.
