Politico: US House Speaker demands State Department recognise Russia as ‘sponsor of terrorism’

The American edition of Politico has learned of the U.S. Congress’ willingness to recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism” bypassing the State Department if it does not do so itself.

The newspaper reports that during a telephone conversation, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that if the State Department does not put Russia on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, Congress will do so itself.

“Pelosi has sent a message to <…> Blinken: recognize Russia as a sponsor of terrorism, otherwise Congress will do it,” Politico wrote, citing knowledgeable sources.

The publication specifies that the congressmen are confident that they will be able to pass the law without the State Department’s involvement.
