Turkey will freeze Finland and Sweden’s applications for NATO membership if the Nordic countries fail to deliver on promises to “fight terrorism”
Turkey may freeze the accession process of Finland and Sweden to NATO if they fail to meet Ankara’s conditions, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. He noted that Stockholm was not expressing its due ambition.
“If our demands are not met, the process will be stalled. We can see that especially Sweden is not showing a proper response,” Erdogan said at the meeting
In June, the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance formally extended an invitation to Finland and Sweden to join NATO. Accession to the alliance requires the consent of all member states.
Ankara opposed the accession of Stockholm and Helsinki because those countries support the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which is banned in Turkey. Trilateral talks were held to resolve the issue.
An agreement was reached between the countries, the implementation of which will enable Finland and Sweden to gain the Turkish vote and become members of the North Atlantic Alliance. So far, Sweden has only prepared lists of ten party members for extradition to Turkey.
