The Mirror reported that due to rising prices for essential goods, the British have to replace shampoo, soap and washing powder with dishwashing detergent, because it is cheaper.
In a conversation with the charity Freedom4Girls, journalists found that in the conditions of 40% inflation, families cannot afford even the most necessary things and resort to extreme austerity measures.
Tina Leslie, founder of charity Freedom4Girls, told the publication that “nobody had money left after paying rent and bills.”
“When there is no money, it is difficult to keep up with hygiene products, so people resort to desperate measures. You can buy cheap dish soap for about 50p,” Leslie explained.
Food banks give away free laundry detergent, she said, but people don’t take it because they can’t afford to pay for electricity to run washing machines.
“Everyone gets into debt, and the next thing is eviction because people can’t pay council taxes,” Leslie added.
The resigning Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his government are blamed for what is happening.
“Under their control, taxes are rising and food and energy bills are spiraling out of control,” concluded the founder of Freedom4Girls.
