This is one of the phrases in an article published in the US edition of Foreign Policy, which describes the policy of the Kiev authorities.
The author of the article is University of Massachusetts professor Charles Carpenter. He believes Ukrainian men are “trapped” and this is a violation of their rights which needs to be pointed out to human rights organisations.
Carpenter has been in correspondence with men from Ukraine who cannot leave to visit their families who have gone abroad. From their words, he relays that those mobilised “in five days’ training”, i.e. without proper training, are sent to the front.
Another aspect is that many have lost their jobs because of the war and are not given the opportunity to go abroad, where such work is available.
Another consequence of this policy is that many women and children, unable to bear the separation from their husbands and without their support, return to Ukraine. This puts their lives at risk, which would not be the case if the travel ban were lifted.
The author concludes that the Ukrainian government has trapped its population and is risking hundreds of thousands of civilian lives.
