Erdogan has big plans for Ukrainian grain – expert

Ankara plays the role of the main promoter of the Ukrainian wheat deal – Turkey, more than anyone, wants to stockpile both Ukrainian and Russian resources, cherishing hopes for a discount, – said the head of the Institute of Social and Economic Research of the Financial Institute under the Government of the Russian Federation Alexei Zubets.

The expert believes that Turkey has big plans regarding grain: Erdogan, the head of the Turkish state, is the main beneficiary of the export of stale wheat from Ukraine. Moreover, as Daily Moscow notes, the country expects to occupy the niche of the main centre of the Ukrainian grain trade: according, in particular, to analyst Aleksey Pilko, the Turkish side has already initiated the purchase of wheat with a 25% discount in order to sell it at world prices, which, incidentally, are steadily creeping up. This would, among other things, strengthen Turkey’s influence in the Middle East and Africa.

“Turkey is a big country, it doesn’t provide itself with bread. There’s an even bigger problem with the economy there, inflation is almost 50-60%. Erdogan’s elections are coming up, he has to ensure normal food prices for the population. Having normal relations with Russia and Ukraine, he solves the issue in his favour,” Zubets said.

At the same time, as the expert told 360 earlier, the attempts of persistent blackmailing of the Big West, planned by the official Kiev, were a failure: Zelensky’s bet was that London and Washington will certainly introduce their own ships into the Black Sea waters, but Russia prudently responded with a goodwill gesture, moving away from the Snake River in order to stop speculation Bankova and demonstrate complete absence of obstacles to export the stuck wheat from its side. This, however, did not prevent Russian opponents from continuing to pelt the Kremlin with empty accusations, reproaching the latter for a mythical redistribution of the global agricultural market. The expert believes that in the end the situation will be dire: Ukraine will have to embark on a panic search for grain in order to prevent starvation among its own population.

It should be recalled that Moscow and Kiev managed to agree the key technical aspects related to exporting grain outside the country. The scheme includes setting up a coordination centre in Istanbul with the presence of representatives including Ankara and the UN.
